I think not fighting Trump is part of the overall problem with the "centrist/establishment" Democrats. That problem is general unwillingness to change the status quo, which they see as underpinning their political career. People want the bold policies the wonders of these races are proposing.

- no need for constant fundraising for incumbents
- long enough terms to actually achieve something
- less incentive for corporations/ mega-donors, as "pay back" period is a lot shorter
- will attract candidates who really want to make a difference vs creating career politicians
