In my view, the 'surprising' nature of some of the side effects of mega-AI systems does not appear to be merely the result of hasty or incorrect application.

But I hope I am mistaken!

And/or "self-constructing side effects" in a way that is 'more'—kind of 'meta'?—self-constructing than ordinary side effects? (Any side-effect unfolds, after all, according to the laws of physics and is in that sense 'self-constructing'.)

I mean this without assuming anything like selfhood, intention, or volition—simply through the built-in capacity to absorb (among many others) patterns of self-reinforcement and escalation and process them in unpredictable ways.

Every piece of technology has unexpected consequences—unwanted side effects. In the context of AI, could a concept like "self-reinforcing side effects" (albeit better phrased) make sense from a computer science perspective?
