I came of age in the eras of Sir Alexander Bustamante and Donald Sangster, but I became politically aware during the years of Hugh Shearer, Michael Manley, and the first Edward Seaga administration.

Symbols do not travel on their own. Real people traveled.
They raised money, obtained documents, left families and familiar communities, crossed continents, and went to Ethiopia believing they were moving toward Zion.

When I arrived in Canada, I attended a documentary about the first time Black people entered the country. Many were West Indians in the Domestic Scheme of the 1950s. 

That caught my attention.
