The demise of a thriving Black business district downtown came at the demand of Winston-Salem’s Chamber of Commerce leaders. Their push began with construction of the 30-story Wachovia Bank Building immediately to the west.

On March 3, 1970, Ms. Polly Graham was evicted by a Forsyth sheriff. Her belongings sat on the curb of Locust St in NE Winston-Salem. The city had condemned Ms. Graham’s landlord’s property several weeks prior, and she felt that she shouldn’t have to continue paying rent for such living conditions.

East Winston, Happy Hill, Boston Thurmond and others were cut up by new expressways and other schemes.

A Black community thrived for over a century at the south end of West Salem, between Walnut Street and Salem Creek, along Broad Street and Popular Street. One of the anchors of this community was Betty Scott Freeman. She was born Sarah Elizabeth Scott in 1857 to Martha Scott and Thomas Clingman.

Happy Hill Gardens, the first public housing in Winston-Salem, opened December 17, 1951. Working-class people had fought for it since federal housing funds first became available in 1935. The Housing Authority demolished the community in 2004 and never fully replaced it despite promises to do so.
