Finished book 21 and 22 this weekend: Home by Marilynne Robinson and Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan. Home was a gentle book that taught me to read punctuation, and Bonjour Tristesse was wonderful and tragic. Recommend both.

Finished my 20th book of the year - User Friendly by Cliff Kuang with Robert Fabricant. As someone who teaches UX adjacent topics like critical creative coding and visual design, this book will be in my class reading lists moving forward. I particularly like the discussion surrounding 'metaphor'.

Finished two books this week, bringing my total to 18. Got through American Psycho which I have so much to say and think about. Also read Edna O'brien's Girl that explored stories of young women captured by Boko Haram in northern Nigeria. I'm emotionally and spiritually exhausted by it.

Finished my 12th novel for the year: Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters. Second (and certainly not last) by the author for this year. It's just so certain in its events and moments right up to a final, public kiss. Quite possibly one of the greatest books I've ever read.

Finished A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong'o. Difficult to articulate it, but the personal and politcal are so inextricably linked throughout it. Hard read, 11th of the year.

Novel number 10 is done: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Superb. I'm enamoured with long books. I also loved the slowness and cruelty of it all.

Finished my ninth novel of the year: Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga. The psychology that sits at its centre is so difficult to unpick in simple terms. It's striking and difficult and refuses let you go. You're forced to look. A remarkable postcolonial portrait of Zimbabwe and womanhood.

Finished Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. I've read Discworld my whole life and I think those books are important, and this one may be the most importantest. Eighth novel of the year.

I finished my seventh read of the year - The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Found it positively challenging at times, but filled with moments of great beauty and great humour. Good book.

I finished Stoner by John Williams which is my sixth novel of the year. The concise, clear intelligence if it's prose is heart-wrenching; particularly as it's about the life of an academic and I'm an academic who has been thinking about life recently. I loved it, profoundly - not that it matters.
