I'm pretty sure Democrats know how to get them back, but now that we have the highly coveted "upper middle class" I don't think they're able to for the most part. Being owned by the upper middle-class also comes with lots of limiting factors that are difficult to break free from.

In the current era of politics, it seems obvious that his numbers would be worse with the "working class" than other demographics. The question that's actually interesting is whether he appealed to the working class more than most Democrats do.
The popular narrative is that he did. I'm not so sure.
