What a terrible softball interview between Nick Robinson and Art Laffer on Radio 4 Today. Bick, if you're not prepared or unable to challenge a free market ideologue, where is the balance?

Well done to the voters of Makerfield. You saw right through the lies, false promises and division offered by Reform and Restore and opted for hope, decency and unity.

You can dig through the political implications of all of it, but frankly, I do think we should be honest:

Reform is just a licence to be cruel.

Their whole politics is built on facile grievances, extrapolated into a loose hatred that attracts not idealogues but just nasty people.
Reform's candidate Robert Kenyon said abortion was a "cowardly act of murder" and implied that people falsely claimed to have been raped

He said: “Don’t dole out the ‘what if someone is raped by their brother’ arguement... don’t want babies? Use contreception! [sic]”

Starmer should have no hesitation in labelling Musk a threat to democracy and national security rather than merely accusing him of “division”.
X owner Elon Musk has reposted his Sept 2025 call that pre-emptive inter-ethnic violence (civil war) is necessary for 'self-defence

"Elon Musk was always right
"You either fight back, or you die."

Reform UK's Robert Kenyon: so hopelessly out of his depth, I wouldn't trust him to run a tap let alone fix one.

Yep - keep hearing the "oh it only affects the U16s" in the media reports and the point is - that no! It affects everyone. We have a major issue with radicalisation amongst the O50s!

No. The big divide in Britain today is between the rich and the poor.

Reform are on the side of the rich. Specifically, rich white English racists who hate the poor and the vulnerable and don’t think they deserve to have rights or public services or dignity.

Just had this flagged with me. This is disgusting.

If Kemi Badenoch had one ounce of leadership in her, she would condemn this.

I don’t want any faux sadness from her or Nick Timothy when one of us is hurt or worse.

This is how low the Conservative Party have sunk.

This is good. To add: I don't want to make everything about Brexit, but I also think our non-anchoring in the EU makes our middle-power status more stark. We are easier to single out for many forms of retaliation now, and that makes the costs of bravery higher than it would be for, say, France.
My column this week: why does the government make claims about stability that it cannot deliver on? Why does the opposition have a foreign policy prospectus well outside the UK's grasp? The answer is in both cases an inability to face up or talk frankly about being a middle power:
The UK must accept it is no longer a global power
Starmer has failed to level with the public that Britain’s control over its destiny is limited

Also very unpatriotic, all things considering
What they’re basically saying is that Starmer and the UK isn’t allowed to operate an even moderately independent foreign policy outside of the United States. That is both ahistoric, wrong and weird for people who constantly tell us how sovereignty is what matters most.
