This poem has stayed with me since student days along with Lawrence Durrells Alexandria Quartet and TSE Waste Land!

I loved the story of Bernard Lovell’s childhood introduction to science.

Jodrell Bank isn’t a museum – it’s a place where science ...
The funding cut threatening the observatory has caused a public outcry and reinforced the site’s image as the spiritual and practical home of astronomy

On 9.33 from Stockport to Southampton. FOUR hours on the train. First class ticket and NO catering the whole journey. Unacceptable service

What a travesty. It is one of University of Manchester’s jewels along with the Whitworth Art Gallery and the Manchester Museum. Would funding be cut if it was in Oxbridge? It is a real science day out for generations of children from far and wide. @manchester.ac.uk

Have my own luxurious bed now but #duvetknowitschristmas in my childhood is seared in me. Visiting my aunt in Abbey Hey Manchester(the ‘smart part of Gorton’!!) I elected to sleep on the floor rather than share a bed with aunt, mother and sister and woke up with my nose against one of these!

I’ve at long last signed up after being sluggish!
Do consider becoming a member. It’s always a great read - and also independent local reporting is fundamental to the health of our politics and places. (I’ve been a longtime supporter and am a small investor.)
These are our six campaign pledges - the things we will do next year if we manage to add 1,000 new members. They were chosen by our readers because they’re things we believe will make Manchester better.

Share them and join the campaign 🙏

Done! It’s easy!
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71... What do you mean, you haven't signed the Parky Charter petition calling for better Parkinson's care?? We Parkies have an excuse - one of the symptoms of PD is apathy. But as for the rest of you, jump to it! (pretty please..)
Petition: Increase funding for people with Parkinson’s and implement the "Parky Charter"
We want the government to take the decisive five steps set out in the Movers and Shakers' "Parky Charter" and to fulfil the Health Secretary’s promises.
