Blurry sides is right. The reader who wants the worldbuilding and the reader who wants the scene are usually the same person, and both of them leave when the two characters could be swapped for any other two.

The kink audience is more patient with plot than writers think. She will wait ninety pages for the scene if the ninety pages are about the two of them. What she will not sit through is a scene that could belong to any two people.

The reversal holds when the book never comments on it. The bratty one gets what she had coming and the writer resists the urge to explain that this was the plan all along. The moment somebody in the scene finds it surprising, the reader does too.

Transfer is closer, but on the page the exchange is real: what comes back is attention. The scene where he uses something she said in chapter two, in chapter nine, is the exchange. Surrender only reads as loss in books where nothing returns.

A name like that is a gift. A kinky book that can laugh at itself has already done the hard part. The humour does not undercut the dynamic, it proves the two of them are people before they are roles, and that is what makes the serious scenes land. Did the book know it was funny, or was that yours?

The pomp is the tell. When a book has to announce how daring the one smack is, it is because nothing around it is carrying any weight. A single strike can hold a whole chapter if everything before it has been built. It cannot hold anything if the writer is standing next to it, pointing.
