In sum, we may be overstating moral differences while overlooking shared values. Rather than assuming what people care about from their politics, tailoring to people's actual values may be a more effective way to bridge divides on politicized issues like climate change.

(3) Assuming someone’s top moral value based only on their political ideology backfired among moderates and conservatives. Messages built on the wrong moral value may simply fail to resonate.

(2) Personalized moral reframing modestly increased climate outcomes (e.g., climate concern, efficacy beliefs, policy support, action intentions) across the political spectrum. It even increased a behavior: clicks on links to climate-related petitions.

Across three experiments (N = 3,455), we found:

(1) Contrary to the narrative of moral division, most liberals and conservatives chose the same top moral value: care. Focusing on relative differences overlooks a far more striking commonality.

Instead we took a different approach. Rather than assuming people’s moral values from their political ideology, we asked them directly which value mattered most to them—and personalized climate messages accordingly.

For example, climate change is one of the most politically polarized issues in the U.S. A common explanation is that liberals and conservatives prioritize fundamentally different moral values. Most moral reframing research starts from this assumption.
