Have you noticed that paragraph 456 is missing from the table of contents of the ICJ Climate Change Advisory Opinion? Shifting from normative content to legal form Laura Miano and Irene Miano explore this omission as an absence-presence and discuss what it reveals about international (climate) law.

Two recent, very interesting pieces on why it matters how international law is spoken about, both:

They probably saw the ILC's mandate, which includes the progressive development of international law and (falsely) assumed it was too woke. In practice this just means the US now has less influence on the development of international norms which will bind the US.

I had low expectations but wow, this is disappointing
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

The Geneva Conventions, adopted 76 years ago today and ratified worldwide, are the backbone of international humanitarian law. They:

🔹 Protect those who are not or no longer fighting.
🔹 Save lives and reduce suffering.

Even in armed conflicts, humanity must prevail.

Highly recommend this piece by @diekjobst.bsky.social for its important contextualisation of Merz‘ invitation that goes beyond the q of (il)legality and beyond Germany;

because sometimes, well-meaning advice „to beware“ does benefit from some fleshing out.

Right, Caesar?

Happy to share that I wrote the March-Editorial for @voelkerrechtsblog.org, though the occasion is not happy at all: in February, Friedrich #Merz invited #Netanyahu to Germany, stating that he'd "find ways" to prevent his arrest. I analyse this openly admitted breach of PIL in its broader context! 👇
