I think it is challenging for sec school teachers- they are charged with “teaching reading” yet are not trained to do so.

In fact, most teachers could easily adapt their teaching to easily support reading development…

But they would probably have to let the daily ppts go

When I work with student teachers on placement at our school, I ask what they've learnt so far about teaching reading. Quite often, they haven't covered anything (unless English trainees) and can't explain to me how they would use a disciplinary text to support reading. I find this surprising.

Reducing use of ppt and reading more authentic disciplinary text would support reading and writing development and help students to actively process the academic content. It should complement teacher explanation and modelling in most subjects. Teaching by ppt can oppose good literacy practice.
