Adventures in Being K’s Dad. K is my son, an adult with autism & his dad’s best pal. My boy loves the beach most of all. It brings him peace & relaxation. And my wife has for years found opportunities to get him to one beach or another as often as she can. They’re beach buddies, & I love that.

Thirty-six years ago this afternoon, Beth and I exchanged vows at the Hotel Hershey. The road from there to here has included love, a much-adored son, laughter, respect and support through a few challenges. I'm a fortunate man indeed.

Visited the doctor this morning. After seeing him, I stopped at the front desk to make my next appointment, and the nice lady looked up at me and asked "Are you checking out?" This caused me some alarm as the doctor seemed to suggest I'm doing fine.

51 years ago today, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, MI. When I was a young adult living in Toledo, I used to drive up that way to take my grandmother to lunch. She always chose the Red Fox. I always wondered what Grandma had in mind.

On this date in 1925, a jury in Dayton, TN, found schoolteacher John Scopes guilty of violating the Butler Act by teaching evolution. The judge fined Mr. Scopes $100. The Tennessee Supreme Court later vacated the fine on a technicality. Yay appellate courts. #AppellateSky

My great-grandparents on the Fine side of the family were Rachel and Reuben. I think of them as the sandwich generation.

As the Committee of Five memorably sings in "1776," John Adams was obnoxious and disliked. However, I think he got (at least) one thing right. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to declare independence, and that's the day we should celebrate as Independence Day. 1/2

Two-hundred fifty years ago today the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence transmitted its draft to the Continental Congress. I’ve no doubt the file was labeled “TJ FINAL, FINAL, REALLY FINAL,” and the transmittal message said something like … 1/2

My octogenarian Jewish mother in Toledo--who likes to follow legal news and then quiz me when I call her--is going to ask me tonight about today's SCOTUS decision in T. M. v. Univ. of Md. Medical Sys. Would I be a bad son if I just told her that Rooker Feldman is one of the guys at her synagogue?

I used to think that, in my next career, I'd open a restaurant on Capitol Hill called "Justice Burger" but, just to mess with people, I'd only serve frankfurters and salmon.

Oral argument this afternoon in the New York Appellate Division in Manhattan. Best courtroom around. Always glad to work with my partner, Joanna Diakos #AppellatePlaces.

On the phone this evening with my octogenarian Jewish mother in Toledo and mentioned I have an oral argument in NYC tomorrow. I coughed. “Oh, dear,” Mom responded, “make sure to take cough drops with you.” This, my friends, is why she is my secret weapon.

Directors and editors often use an establishing shot at the beginning of a scene. A good introduction in a legal brief serves a similar function.
