Whilst you lack the strength to do away with bourgeois parliaments and every other type of reactionary institution, you must work within them ... otherwise you risk turning into nothing but windbags.

Everybody wanna read 1902 Lenin nobody wanna read 1920 Lenin.

A chinese woman was MCing a (math) conference. The grad student next to me: "who's that?" Me: [her name]. Guy: Is she a postdoc or something? Folks, she was being cited in every single fucking talk.
Socials team posted video of me talking about organic intellectualism (as part of a keynote where it made sense). Today, hundreds of (mostly) men are telling me that I might like this guy with similar ideas.

The guy? Gramsci.

People need to keep terms like "bayesian" and "priors" out of their fucking mouth. If you don't know what it means you look like a child. If you do know what it means and you aren't writing a statistics paper you look like an asshole.
Meanwhile, the market has
- Dozens of confirmed early cases (the lab has zero)
- Clusters within the market near animal stalls
- traces of virus found in animal cages

Leakers often cite "bayesian likelihood" but animal spillover is common while a novel virus leaking from a lab has never happened.

The anti-data center movement is like "I don't want to pay more money for a thing that will not benefit me at all and will actively make my life measurably worse in a bunch of ways" and the pro-data center movement is like "We want it to be illegal for you to not like us."

I was covering education at a previous job during the height of the MOOC boom and it was basically the AI mania in miniature: a management class absolutely frothing at the mouth at the promise that technology would allow them to fire all those pesky workers (teachers).
Joke‘s on me because MOOCs failed at being remembered and but MOOC politics absolutely won the university.

Fucking this. Also games journalism blowing up the social justice aspect of the story to distract from their conflicts of interest, putting the women involved in more danger by making them higher profile.
Mine's kinda more niche:

A lot of high ranking Triple AAA Video Game execs around GamerGate, chose to not oppose GamerGate as forcefully, as they saw a lot of feminists and journalists targeted by GamerGate as also pushing for Unionization of workers, so they viewed Gaters as "Enemy of my enemy".

It should be so spectacular, for so long, that the public accountability becomes white noise. We should become *bored* with all the accountability, it should go so long.
Agree 💯 and emphasize “spectacular”

Proportional to Bannon’s shock and awe tactic of flooding the zone with bullshit…

A torrential cavalcade of accountability. A devastating supercell of mesocyclonic justice. This is the way!
I’m interested in any political imagination for accountability. It has to be proactive & retroactive. It has to be spectacular. And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.

BREAKING: Nearly half of House Democrats voted to cut off aid to Israel, a moment of reckoning as the party confronts years of voter outrage over the war in Gaza.
In seismic shift, more than 100 House Democrats vote to end Israel aid
The amendment to block military assistance failed, but partisan split cemented the increasingly polarized view of the U.S. ally.

This is why Dems are reluctant to run on retribution, despite its popularity. They want the power he accrued and the surveillance infrastructure he formalized. Period.

No.
That oversimplifies. There’s good uses cases for ‘surveillance’ — needing data for analysis to define/fix issues & see if it’s working. IMHO seems a solvable problem if certain things put in place. We’ve got smarter nicer more ethical ppl on the Dem side & #MoreOfUs. 🤓🗳️🇺🇸

Might be fine if could ensure protect folks not doing anything wrong not sucked in without due process or adequate cause, maybe anonymize the data until/unless there’s cause/case - so far however seems even crime effectiveness is questionable (eg outdated/incorrect data for stolen cars wrt Flock).

The fact that J.K. Rowling successfully bullied Amnesty International into taking down a report that accurately called out her attack on trans people, especially trans women, is so repulsive and such a display of the power of her money, and her choice to put her vast fortune behind persecution.
Amnesty removes report that called JK Rowling's centre 'anti-rights'
Amnesty International UK has removed a report which labelled JK Rowling's sexual abuse crisis centre Beira's Place as "anti-rights".

The issue is that no matter how good your use of ai is, the apps use the same destructive infrastructure as any other use.

There isn’t an ethical argument for using it imo.

Oh cool, an Easter egg feature that traps you in a driverless car and kidnaps you when it's decided you've misbehaved.

Imagine what a hacker group or ICE can do with this. The fact that this is even functionally possible is horrifying.

If AI makes college obsolete it won’t be because of how it credentials or if it credentials at all.

The far more likely scenario is that AI’s necropolitics will finally decimate the liberal state’s zombie institutions for which credentials are produced.

So, yay AI, I guess.

WTF, NYer. "If we agree that college primarily serves a credentialling process that stamps select young people as worthy of work..." We do not. So much for the bastion of erudite journalism. This is sensationalism, damaging our most vital institution: education.
