It's 2026 and for no obvious reason, here is a thread of great and meaningful songs:

For me, it's this: I write because I have something to SAY, concepts I want to explore for MYSELF. Writing is figuring out what I THINK. Each of my books is very personal. I'm exploring concepts and emotions unique to my xp. That's why we enjoy art: we're connecting with other humans.
It doesn't matter how much text the machines put out. Even if it were somehow indistinguishable from your writing, I'd never want to read it, and I'll always want to read the next Kameron Hurley book. You are a human and I only want to read what talented humans write.

This resonates with me, as a scientist. The journey is the reason, and the outcome needs to reflect the journey. The LLM has no journey and can share no insight. Need a rubber duck to talk to? Call a colleague, use an actual rubber duck. Need to scour the literature? ...
Further, there is nothing AI can do for me. Nothing I *want* it to do for me. Even if it wasn't an inept plagiarism machine, I like writing, editing, rewriting, planning, researching, all of it. I want to do all of it. I want humans to handle the stuff beyond my capacity.

NEW: A new pre-print study offers the first causal evidence that outsourcing reasoning tasks to AI can rapidly erode users' independent performance AND their will to persist despite difficulty.

"People’s persistence drops... they’re also not willing to try without AI.”

Researchers working with the A.I. system Claude have come to understand that the model’s selfhood, like our own, is a matter of both neurons and narratives. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/kEX1vV

Outsourcing your thinking* and giving away the opportunity to practice professional skills is making science - and scientists - less impactful.

*- Note that the LLMs cannot think, only generate realistic sounding sentences based on existing knowledge in its unethically-acquired training data.

STOP USING THAT SHIT.
AI consumed as much water as the water bottle industry this year.

It also created as much carbon pollution as New York City, according to a new study.

It’s guzzling up even more water than expected.

I literally just found out (five minutes ago!) that they have finished shooting Neuromancer by @greatdismal.bsky.social and I can’t wait. This is the book that made me come out of the closet and tell people that I loved science fiction, which was unusual for a 20 yr old girl. It’s still unusual!

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

The opinions sections in WaPo, NYT, etc. have always had their share of garbage. Now WaPo won't tolerate any opinions speaking against the excess of free markets? Or against the "personal liberties" of billionaires? Fuck that noise.
SCOOP: WaPo Opinion editor David Shipley is out. Jeff Bezos emails staff about a change to Post Opinions: "We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets."

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️
