Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities were under russian attack last night.
Again.
I had a slow warcoffee.
We have water.
Even water is among russian targets.

How welcome the sunshine feels.

Culture matters. The UK is a great example.

Yesterday, the British Council announced £2 million in new funding over three years to support Ukrainian cultural organisations.

The funding will go directly to them.

Thank you 🇬🇧

Yesterday, I sent a letter about how the Old English word “orc” became part of Ukraine’s language of war.

Here, russian occupiers are often called orcs.

The word travelled across languages, cultures and centuries before it reached us.

How Kyiv adapts to war challenges.

Some of the changes:

From today (Sept 10), businesses may stay open during yellow drone alerts; red alerts (missiles or mass drone attacks) mean everyone must go to a shelter.

The same applies to cultural events. A shelter must be nearby. Safety first

Kyiv.
Between attacks.
I went out to have a warcoffee and a bun.
I’ve been writing since the morning to the sound of explosions.
A new letter is coming soon.
To those who know its value.

Yesterday I sent a Sunday Letter.

Its focus is that life goes on even between attacks.

I described my visit to Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where I saw treasures from the sacristy (where objects used in worship and other church treasures are kept).

Yesterday, I sent a letter about the “russian world”, an ideology of russia’s special mission and influence beyond its borders.

I traced how it evolved over centuries.

Today, attacks on Kyiv resumed. They show what this “mission” looks like.
