This is obvious. Taiwan understands it, but its remarkable how many Americans, who claim to be worried about China, don't.

Let me explain escalation
1) Russia attacks & invades Ukraine in Feb 2014 (escalation)
2) little or the minimum is done in reaction to these events. Ukrainians are initially even told to stand down
3) Russia annexes Crimea (escalation)
4) relatively minor sanctions are launched
