When leafing through bird books as a boy, some species had an air of exotic mystique, the ones you dreamt of seeing! Dartford Warbler was always the one for me and the dream was finally achieved this morning on my local Strensall common - happy days 😄🙏🏻

What a bonus bird - a several second flight view of a Quail just a few steps down the path from Bempton RSPB Centre. Flew up from about 3 feet away 😁

I had a splendid evening yesterday with a musical quartet of Grey Partridge, roding Woodcocks,a barking Roebuck and churring Nightjars, all performing in harmony! Warm up act - fabulous views of a hunting Hobby. A once in a lifetime moment!

Whilst I was listening to Garden Warblers and admiring a summer plumaged godwit at Nosterfield today, the blue tits have been busy!

Absolutely chuffed to find a patch-first Lesser Whitethroat in the Easingwold fields this afternoon, along with Common Whitethroats, a single swallow, topped off with a Holly Blue, dozens of Orange-tips and beautiful Star of Bethlehems

Found a deep diving Dipper on a Scottish Loch, diving off a post! Not behaviour I had seen before!

It sang from there too 😀

My first ever white-tailed eagle was an adult scoped from the Scottish mainland looking over to the Skye coastline, a distance of roughly 30 miles….. my views today from North Duffield were far better at 2 miles!! 😂🥴

Over the moon to finish my birding year with a 3 way standoff between a carrion crow,a red kite and a hen harrier to the north of Helmsley. Made for some highly entertaining aeronautics!! Prayers for the latter given its proximity to the moors…

I have been birding for many years but today I witnessed something never seen before - a male blackbird essentially “lekking” to a rival. In a passable impression of a black grouse, his tail fanned up and out like a drawbridge and he mantled his wings, gaped and hissed - interesting stuff!!
