Excellent thread from @astroroyalscot.bsky.social

This hearing was very important. Let's see if UKRI announcements will be at the level of such commitments.

If not, and such commintments are not met, then I am also looking forward to seeing how Ian Chapman explain it to the Lords next week...
On display this morning, parliamentary scrutiny at its very best with @chionwurah.bsky.social and her committee questioning Secretary of State Liz Kendall about the STFC funding cuts. Worth watching in full, but here are some of the highlights!

UK research vandalism update. Surprising that such callous and unnecessary damage is being pushed through by a department ahead of a change in leadership.

Happy Higgs-versary 🎉

On this day, 14 years ago, the @atlasexperiment.bsky.social and @cmsexperiment.bsky.social announced the existence of a particle with characteristics consistent with those of the #HiggsBoson.

How did we discover the Higgs boson? - Home | CERN
The Higgs boson was discovered, almost 50 years after first being proposed, by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at CERN in 2012. But why did it take so long to find it? With a mass of more than 120 times that of the proton, the Higgs boson is the second-heaviest particle known today.

Another excellent article from @francesjones.bsky.social . These cuts represent an enormous act of self harm and solutions that maintain PPAN science must be found.

Intensity is on the rise at the #LHC 💫

The Large Hadron Collider propelled particle bunches containing more than 230 billion protons (2.3 x 10^11): 40% more than usual. These bunches generated an average of 150 collisions, compared to around 65 collisions during normal operations.
