Smaller self hosted models will always under perform the larger ones. I think your experience and those of the other commenters are consistent with the current reality of these technologies. They can't do what people are promising. Yet.

In my experience the usefulness of LLMs in this space has been seriously overstated. The huge corporate models are only really useful for writing short utility functions. I've had limited success getting summaries and explanations from these models on single files less than 300 lines.

In my experience it's usually worse than I remembered.
