Terrible loss. Climate Progress and his books were how I began to understand the size and nature of the climate crisis and how to address it.

One minute AI folks are telling us we’re overreacting when we oppose data centers and the next that their work will kill us all. It‘s like they think we’re not listening to all of it.

This asymmetry of power is the only way we can understand the climate devastating emergency and the potential blood-curling AI emergency.
The AI problem is also, at the end of the day, about our democracy. The real problem is oligarchy.

If we had a political system which represented what most people wanted, we could deal with AI in a way that ensured public benefits and safety. The problem is a few oligarchs decide our fate.

So it looks like we will blow past 1.5˚C of warming. Some "overshoot" beyond this goal is now looking inevitable.

But can we realistically return the planet to less than 1.5˚C of warming?

Maybe, but I have my doubts about some of the proposed pathways to do so.

Making everyone feel like there's a fixed pie of resources and their slice is shrinking and everyone is out to fuck everyone else creates fertile ground for conservatism & eventually authoritarianism. The absolute core conviction of online leftists to the contrary is endlessly baffling.

It *is* funny, and I think I wanna cry. As in scream, not as in weep. No, weep also.
I also made this one which is funnier I think

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence.

One thing about speeding that many drivers refuse to accept: In urban and suburban environments, speeding doesn't even get you somewhere significantly faster. You are just getting to your next red light or highway choke point faster. You are endangering other people for almost no upside.

Man it stinks to see things you worked for years to warn about come to be. Nothing to do but keep going, but it hurts how much it didn't have to be this way.

If your government doesn’t treat the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions & the rapid adaptation to the warming that is already baked in as its two organisational axes, what legitimacy does it still have?
All other issues - the economy, defense, health, or AI - are extensions and enablers.

The problem is that this dynamic inherently advantages the right, which has most of the old standbys (race, gender, reaction, nostalgia for the good old days) in its stall, while the left is over here trying to get people exercised about, like, the abstract notion of capitalism.

The Aramco Young Player Award (yes you read that correctly), handed out by Aramco chairman and PIF governor Al-Rumayyan to Pau Cubarsi.

A player who played an amazing tournament while his country was on fire and yesterday's training cancelled due to wildfire smoke.

Tenemos que sacar el clima de este estado prepolítico.
