3. Strangest read?: reading THERE IS NO ANTI-MEMETICS DIVISION and ACOTAR back to back was certainly a tonal jump.
4. Comfort read?: either some Doctor Who novelisations or rereading Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles in its entirety, which I hadn’t done for many years.

1. Fave new author: James Baldwin, whose interviews I’d appreciated but books I’d never read. RF Kuang’s BABEL was also excellent.
2. Most disappointing?: POLOSTAN by Stephenson really didn’t hit the mark. Also, THE ILL-MADE KNIGHT and THE LAST UNICORN are classics but didn’t scratch my itch.

Here in Melbourne, most independent trading card shops now refuse to stock Pokemon cards at all due to the number of break-ins. Very sad! Thankfully I only play small weird TCGs that no one has really heard of.

Playing both of these was inspired by rereading Tibor Fischer’s brilliant, hilarious, heartbreaking debut novel UNDER THE FROG. My previous copy got destroyed in a water leak some years back, but I recently retouch it and read it for the bazillionth time. One of my favourite books ever.

I started playing some NIGHTS OF FIRE, the thematic sequel that picks up a short time later as the Russians move against the revolutionaries in earnest, but I find the story more hopeless and less human-centred - more a tough puzzle than a last stand against the darkness. Good but not what I wanted.
