August was pretty good to me for ficwriting/edits, but I'll be slowing down for September for other obligations. This fic is still very much in progress (and has gained nearly 20k in the editing process), + I'm more than halfway through with the monstrous 170k pile of editing I'd put off (oops)

It’s about time we had a reckoning with the need so many writers feel to over-explain everything aspect of their stories, even in non Weird genres. Readers don’t need to be babied. Let us figure things out. Leave room for interpretation. Over-explanation makes writing worse.
Weird fiction seems to be having a moment but without lots of the people trying to write it actually grasping what it is.
I keep reading stories where there’s clearly an attempt at vaguely gesturing towards ‘the Weird’ but they just cant help over-explaining everything. Truly frustrating stuff.

This fic is definitely breaking 90k by the time revisions are done and it's standing behind me with a steel chair. I have to keep in mind something this long is new for me and it's okay if it isn't absolutely perfect; the learning process has been immense, sometimes painful, but extremely rewaring

I'm off work until next Tues so I've been getting some fic editing done. I thought I had something ready to post, but turns out I wrote the ending half awake & don't like it on reread, & don't have a better idea yet. On the plus side, I have plenty more almost-done work to tackle while it marinates

I'm off work next week and I badly need it for editing this fic. The last few months have been so busy, and as much as I enjoy the job security, my time around work has been packed as hell, too. I'm looking forward to a week of (mostly) uninterrupted writing and editing time

First chapter of this fic is the toughest to edit, mostly because it was written before I did the bulk of my research. Some of it is just thrown together, all misplaced exposition dump, no sense of pacing. I've learned a lot since starting, and while it needs some revision, I feel great about it

This feels increasingly relevant as I continue to try to make friends with other fandom creatives
Maybe, when considering your audience on Ao3, you should not treat other fic writers as competition and start treating your readers' lives as being in tension with your writing. If your writing does not win out over someone's other choices to spend their free time, they'll do something else. /1

My move is complete so I'm resurfacing. I love the new place so much, even though we're still halfway living out of packed boxes and a bunch of minor stuff went way off plan. It's going to take a couple more weeks (& paychecks) to get fully set up, but I have a nice private space to write and work 😌
