I dunno when the bubble bursts maybe there’ll be cheap cards again.

Well even people that can afford to have kids aren’t doing it, or having fewer.

Turns out if you give people the choice between kid or bigger house, a portion will go for bigger house.

Because modern economies is built on the assumption of slow stable population growth. If a country’s population shrinks it will eventually destabilize the country.

Ah ok, my mistake.

I interpreted 240 justices as unpacking. Isn’t he saying add justices until the court is majority democrat?

I feel lime the other issue is that restricting suffrage is too far outside the Overton window to be worth talking about.

Undermining republican sources of funding, like car salesmen, real estate agents, health supplements, feels more likely to happen so it makes sense to focus on that.

I feel like the only criteria for disenfranchising Americans that couldn’t be abused would be to disenfranchise people based on if they voted for Trump. Which is probably the best possible criteria.

I mean gore “lost” Florida by 500 votes. You’re telling me at least 500 of the 100,000 people who voted for Nader wouldn’t have voted for gore?

Nader easily took the margin of votes Gore needed to win.

I’m not saying it was the ONLY factor, but it was A factor
September 22, 2026 at 10:51 PM
This reminds me a little of recent discussion about Nader’s 2000 run. Nader supporters argue since he wasn’t the ONLY reason gore lost, he wasn’t responsible for gore losing. But just because he wasn’t the only factor doesn’t mean he wasn’t A factor. And it’s the same with candidate gender today.
September 22, 2026 at 10:30 PM
I guess when I say drag I mean when you factor in votes gained and lost because of gender there’s a net loss overall, and I think it’s small but just based on people I’ve talked to (I’ve canvassed too 😬) I think it’s a little more than half a percentage.
September 22, 2026 at 10:25 PM
I don’t think a woman can’t win the presidency but I think it’s possible it’s a small drag. It’s like having an extra third party candidate siphoning a percentage point or two.

I do think AOC is talented and popular enough that she can overcome that drag.
September 22, 2026 at 10:16 PM
I don’t know if I can even defend that? It seems self evident to me. I mean reading is still the primary way people learn information. The more you read the better you are at it and it’s a key skill in order to be a functional member of society.
September 22, 2026 at 10:02 PM
I guess I mean critique? Like I said, both the hunger games and DCC apply the cultural touchstones of reality tv and celebrity culture to death games as a form of criticism. It isn’t the deepest criticism but theyre both mass market entertainment, not a cultural studies journal.
September 22, 2026 at 9:59 PM
I think it’s better to read than not read. There are definitely many, many better things to read than DCC, but if a persons alternative to reading DCC is to not read, than it’s better to get some reading in. But that’s just my opinion.
September 22, 2026 at 8:53 PM
I mean it’s a send up in the same way the hunger games are a send up: it’s showing a system that takes something horrible and showing and mines it for entertainment as a reflection of the way our own entertainment industry mines personal tragedy and conflict for entertainment.
September 22, 2026 at 6:39 PM
And sure the solutions it offers are mostly violent, it’s an action series. You shouldn’t really expect it to solve capitalism. If it offers any message it’s that personal connections and community are the best way to overcome a hostile system.
September 22, 2026 at 6:32 PM
I mean it does a good job of showing how the entertainment industry is exploitive but can be exploited in turn, it shows how personal bonds of community can overcome rapacious systems, it’s about carving out personal space in a surveillance state.
September 22, 2026 at 6:30 PM
It seems weird you’re singling out DCC then, if your problem is with lit rpgs as a whole. I mean it’s a shallow genre, but at least it’s still reading? It’s probably better for you than playing a video game.
September 22, 2026 at 6:28 PM
And the series is a good a sendup of gamer and fan culture. The fact Carl hates the game he’s in and is actively trying to sabotage it adds some interesting layers to the story. It adds a bit of commentary about capitalism and media as exploitation.
September 22, 2026 at 8:08 AM
I mean it’s no Everlasting or Spear Cuts through Water, but I think there’s a reason DCC stands out from other lit rpgs. The relationship between Carl and donut has a genuine emotional core, the lore is more complex than most sinilar series and dinnamen doles it out at a good slow pace.

I think making US support conditional on Israel meeting certain humanitarian benchmarks would be more effective.

So set dates for ending military operations in Gaza, rebuilding infrastructure, and eventually statehood.

If they don’t meet the goal by a certain date cut support by 20%.
September 15, 2026 at 3:57 PM
Just reading this thread and I like that this is is the point at which you realize drop your original argument because you realized it makes no sense and switch to “you should be nice to me or I won’t vote!”
September 15, 2026 at 5:30 AM
Which is how I interpret the original quote tweet, that foreign policy can’t just follow public opinion because the approach has to be more sophisticated that what the public is usually pushing for.

Biden’s unconditional support was immoral, but that doesn’t mean the opposite is the best policy.
September 14, 2026 at 1:28 PM
I feel like a lot of people on here, at least, do think the US just has to pull a lever to stop all the violence. That being the “cut off all support” lever.
