I bear them no ill will, but if this “world’s photography festival” is putting up street advertising in nearby neighborhoods the weekend before… seems pretty desperate

Which, again, is still preferable to Altman and Elon. But let's not pretend this is something it's not.

Tom Waits is listed as a judge for the International Songwriting Competition again in 2026, along with Hannah Gadsby, Salif Keita, and Olivia Rodrigo's idol/friend Robert Smith.

I think about that every time I listen to "drop dead," which is a lot since she sang it on SNL this spring. I would not give Olivia Rodrigo a perfect score for prosody, but damn I love listening to it. I guess that's why Tom Waits never heard my song. Perfect prosody doesn't count for much.

My song was graded on about four qualities, and I got a perfect score for prosody, which was something to be proud of, once I looked up what "prosody" meant. I've carried that around in my head like a little gold star.

The anonymous committee did not forward my song. Some of the feedback I got was fair – like, I see how it was confusing that the chorus was addressed to "Atlanta" but didn't say anything else about Atlanta. But I never found a word that fit better.

I’d forgotten Half Magic starts with the four children reading The Enchanted Castle! (They’d already borrowed everything else on the library but that one was out.) That’s how much of an E. Nesbit fan he was.

Anyway, so far so good.
