are there hacks for ereaders to type on with a connected keyboard? Kobo devices aren’t expensive and easier to root

Thanks! it’s always scary to do it yourself

I appreciate the transparency on it, if the project was closed source I wouldn’t even bring it up as an alternative to Twitch. LLM code is just getting more pervasive and it’s getting harder to actively avoid in any context.

I do like that it’s open source and able to be self hosted, but why not use Owncast at that point? At least the amount of generated code in it is fractional.

It makes it hard for me to trust a platform that bandwagons off of the genuine concerns of their competitors. If Claude wasn’t 3rd for most commits to the code in their platform I would probably just start streaming over there, but there’s no reason to trust the default won’t change.
Streamplace exists to give creators true ownership of their video. Licensing and consent information are baked into every stream. Yesterday, we added a new field and enabled it by default: "Don't use my video to train generative AI."

These are screenshots of the AI commits on github for Owncast at 35 between Claude and CoPilot, and StreamPlace at 296 from just Claude. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about StreamPlace like it should be acceptable if you are against genAI.

I haven’t found any statements from Owncast about their stance on AI, but the point of it being a self hosted solution should limit the data scraping threats to rando bots online that are scraping our data already without consent.

Anyone can look at the code contribution list and see there isn’t an AI listed, and I would feel slightly better if the source code wasn’t hosted on github but here we are.

So the question really becomes what the alternatives are actually available if you care about what platform you’re on and what it stands for. So far the only one I’ve seen that isn’t built with AI and is technically competent is Owncast. The trouble is it requires more setup and a dedicated server.

This is all to say these platforms are never to be trusted, and without the people that make these platforms worth while organizing an impactful response I don’t see any reason they will change. And any effort would need to be over an extended period of time to have any effect.

These tech companies still operate on the idea of “move fast and break things” when they become institutional pillars of the economy. They will break the rules and deal with whatever the consequences are, it won’t matter compared to what they gain. The opt out to me is just asking them to play nice.

I am anti gen AI, and i’ve worked for large companies that feel the need to push this garbage. They know the typical user isn’t going to leave twitch over this, and another sizeable subsection will not opt out. I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of opting out anyways.
