Naturally, I started with Sir Arthur C. Clarke because every kid in Sri Lanka knew about the world-famous writer living in Sri Lanka at the time. I devoured everything Clarke wrote that I could lay my hands on (thanks to the extensive collection at the British Council and American Center libraries in Kandy, Sri Lanka, as well as the several science fiction books that my uncle in Canada sent me after hearing of my interest in the genre), and loved every bit of it.

When Riyas told me about this story at a cafe in Singapore earlier this year, his description of the last scene left me stunned. It is a story of identity and its loss. It is the story of every refugee, repelled by both the land where they belonged and the land that gave them refuge, but could never quite fit them in. It is the story of an identity in limbo.

Another “lost” Tambimuttu story / இன்னுமொரு “தொலைந்துபோன” தம்பிமுத்து சிறுகதை மரமேறி / The Tree Climber (அம்ருதா ஆகஸ்ட் 2026, Amrutha August 2026) In their August issue, Amrutha has published my Tamil translation of the next "lost Tambimuttu" story, 'The Tree Climber.' Thanks again to Shakuntala Tambimuttu for making a copy of the original available (reproduced below) which appeared in the now defunct The Reporter on September 22, 1955. The story is set in Tambimuttu's native Atchuvely roughly a century ago. It tells the story of the tree climber, Velu, who is part of Tambimuttu's grandfather's household.

LIPI library, a US-based startup that aims to bring South Asian literature to the digital world, approached me last year asking if they can use some of my translations. Jaffna Monitor Publications and Ghazal Publications have jointly brought out The Meccan Shawl, an English translation மக்கத்துச் சால்வை, the first collection of short stories by the veteran Sri Lankan Tamil writer from the Eastern Province, S. In their Spring 2026 issue, Copper Nickel, a leading American literary magazine, has published The Gold Line, my translation of Shobasakthi's short story, தங்கரேகை. The translation is accompanied by a "folio" containing a brief introduction to the context of the story.
