Defenders Day is celebrated in Ukraine today.

Ukraine exists and remains independent solely because there are men and women who defend her. They are concrete names, fates, people. Glory to all who defend Ukraine. Eternal memory to fallen Heroes and Heroines.

NEW: The NIH is quietly restricting funding for research that evaluates how public policy impacts human health.

According to internal documents I obtained, the agency no longer considers policymakers "mission relevant" — a massive shift for the biomedical funder.

My latest for @nature.com:

The Germans have a perfect word to describe what is going on in the US today: Volksverdummung. "Volksverdummung" is a compound word that translates to the "dumbing down" or stupefaction of the public through media or misinformation to make citizens accept false narratives or political agendas.

Donald Trump has never shown an appreciation of the arts. During his first term, Trump never attended the Kennedy Center Honors. Now, even though it takes an act of Congress to change the name, he has put his name ahead of President Kennedy, who was a champion of the arts. It is funny, isn’t it?
