"Some call us fairies. Just as there are many kinds of people, there are many kinds of fae. Some are kind trickster, some are not as kind."
“What is a fae?” Pippin asks curiously. “Are you like an elf? Or… or are you like Tom Bombadil!”
"That is one way to look at it."

She reached out, grabbing one of the previously offered cherries.

"Fae like me can be persuaded to return that which is given. Some may ask for a trade, of course."

She offered a kinder smile while brushing her hair aside.

"Names have power. By giving me your name, you gave me power over you."

She knelt before him.

"I am of the fae folk, the ones you people would call fairies. I know of kings because my court presides over summer. I am known as Aine."
“Gah!”

The old man stuttered, but fell to his knees.

“What is this devilry?!”
There it was. Pact sealed.

"Then, Denethor..." She snapped her fingers, magic taking control. "Kneel."

He gave me his name freely. You all heard it.

“Oh! Yes, I believe I do… if you took my name, I would have to ask for it back!”

Pippin smiles then, glad at his conclusion.
"No, I don't think I will. You never 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 me your name, you simply told me what it is. I also never asked to 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 your name." She smiled. "Do you understand?"

"Are you giving me your name?"

"Are you giving me your name?"
The Steward rolls his eyes.

“Denethor, son of Ecthelion. Steward of Gondor. And yours?”
"Oh my... You aren't arresting a poor traveler are you? Without even giving them your name? How is one to know if you do not tell them?"

Denethor scowls.

“You should already know it if you are within my halls. GUARDS!”
"A wild of sorts," she mused, lips stretching into a grin. "But first, kind sir, may I have your name?"
September 5, 2026 at 9:38 PM
They were going to be perfectly harmless. Maybe have him do a jig on command or something. Just enough to humiliate him.
Fae tricks are no small thing. He'd have better conclusion having his leg torn off by a crocodile.
Anger? I was just going to play a trick on him.

Anger? I was just going to play a trick on him.
Perhaps you should not be so quick to anger just because one individual did not ingratiate himself to you.
A man is getting an attitude with me. I'm about to make his day worse.

“There is no king by that name in our histories,” Denethor plucks some grapes from the plate. “Are you a wild woman of the North, then?”
Oh? A haughty one.

"Only that I was the one who took away Ailill's right to rule many moons ago."

Did someone say getting an attitude with fae?
Imagine getting an attitude with a fae.

Sneers.

“And what would you know of the kings of old?”
I remember a time where a man had to marry specific members of my kind to be a king.

“… oh.”

Pippin slowly takes back his offered cherries. Something wary grows in his glance to the fae.

“Is that what you intend, now that I’ve introduced myself?”
"Names, dear Pippin, carry power. Never give it freely or someone could use it to gain power over you."
September 5, 2026 at 7:29 PM
Oh look at that. A long table with a feast all prepared. Oh wow.
September 2, 2026 at 7:37 AM
Perhaps I can, perhaps I can't. You will never know unless you ask.
You cannot give me what I want.
That solely depends on what you would trade for your name.

"Names, dear Pippin, carry power. Never give it freely or someone could use it to gain power over you."
“If it’s about the food,” Pippin begins, his mouth still full. “I already know — swallow before eating another piece! But this is just so delicious! Would you like some?”

He eagerly offers Aine a cherry.
Could she get him on a technicality? Probably, if she wanted to. But she was too amused by his lack of danger awareness to try.

"Pippin," she mused. "You may call me Aine. May I give you a word of advice?"
September 2, 2026 at 7:35 AM
That solely depends on what you would trade for your name.
If you had something to offer me, perhaps. But that I doubt.
September 2, 2026 at 7:33 AM
A trade then?
It's simply not the way of the world.
Why not give something away for free?
September 2, 2026 at 7:28 AM
Why not give something away for free?
It requires consideration, does it not? Why give anything away freely?
It's a yes or no question?
September 2, 2026 at 7:24 AM
You can literally just say no.
