Starving Artist Final Review of SaltPrint software
Today, I will conclude my review of SaltPrint software for alternative photo printmaking methods. It is fantastic software for preparing digital negatives that hold the widest tonal range for otherwise high contrast processes. You can download this open-source software here: First off, in case it wasn't apparent in the first part of this software review , SaltPrint is not a Photoshop replacement (I use…

My Broke & Starving Artist Blog 🤣

I don't believe they ever say "get rich quick" and "be an artist" in the same sentence, or at least I've never heard that. If anything, it seems that being an artist can easily lead one down the road towards poverty and destitution. Why I continue down this path…

I don't believe they ever say "get rich quick" and "be an artist" in the same sentence, or at least I've never heard that. If anything, it seems that being an artist can easily lead one down the road towards poverty and destitution. Why I continue down this path boggles my mind at times, but it's certainly a testament to my undying desire to unleash my inner creativity upon a viewing audience.

Pivoting Creativity

I made the above picture in a screen printing workshop a few years ago, and found it underneath a pile of other prints. It was a nice reminder of the various artistic mediums I can turn to when I get that creative impulse; not to mention, it was also quite gratifying that I…

I made the above picture in a screen printing workshop a few years ago, and found it underneath a pile of other prints. It was a nice reminder of the various artistic mediums I can turn to when I get that creative impulse; not to mention, it was also quite gratifying that I made it by hand. I also want to state that I am writing this post myself.

If you've ever wanted to dive into cyanotype photo-printmaking, and are in the Stockholm area on the weekend of the 18th-19th, now's your chance! Upcoming Workshop September 18-19!
Hybrid / Analog Cyanotype Photo-Printmaking Workshop Questions and registration [email protected] instructor Caio Simbula The purpose of this course is to combine digital photo technology with cyanotype printmaking, one of photography’s oldest printing methods developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842. The cyanotype process relies on ultraviolet light sensitive iron salts, the same chemistry used for making architectural blueprints. Often associated with “camera-less” photogram techniques, we will be creating digital negatives of the final print size for contact printing photographic images onto hand-coated cyanotype papers in the Graphic Department’s UV Vacuum Frame Expo-sure Unit.

SaltPrint Digital Negative Software
Today I'm writing about Steve Fabiani's SaltPrint software for creating digital negatives for alternative photo printmaking processes. Here's what the interface looks like: Some of you may be wondering why my negative is red, rather than the typical black and white negative. Many alternative photo printing methods use UV (ultra-violet) light sources for exposure, rather than white light that is associated with black and white photo enlargements from a darkroom enlarger.

Anyone who owns and shoots with a Rolleicord knows how scarce it is to find lens hoods and filters for these vintage cameras. As someone who shoots mostly black and white film with my analog cameras, filters are essential in order to control the contrast of the negative. Lens hoods are also essential to prevent flares in your images. When I found an orange Rollei Bay 1 filter, I was elated.

Scripting for DaVinci Resolve

It's been an interesting time for me, to say the least. It's been a couple of years since I've worked as a VFX Editor, so when I found myself volunteering on a passion project (thanks Christina Sidoti!), The Alchemy of a Storm: I wondered if I still had it in me. Of…

It's been a couple of years since I've worked as a VFX Editor, so when I found myself volunteering on a passion project (thanks Christina Sidoti!), The Alchemy of a Storm: I wondered if I still had it in me. Of course, it was kind of like riding a bike.

I’m really upset about the murders ICE and the Trump administration are getting away with.

I now have a really good understanding of how Nazis came to power in Germany. It’s on display in my birth country.

I haven’t made political art in decades. It’s time. This is what my birth country looks like in many Democratic cities and states that refuse to bow down to Dumpty-Trumpty.
Collage assembled from news photos (I claim fair use), flag generated with Flux locally on my machine. Feel free to share.
