The answer to our political funding crisis is simple and obvious. It would send our politics in the opposite direction to its current, disastrous trajectory. So why won't Labour MPs pick it up?

Political donations are poison to our democracy – but there’s an easy antidote to that | George Monbiot
As revelations about Reform UK’s donors emerge, it’s clear that increasingly complex forms of patronage can’t be regulated effectively. We need a clean sweep, says columnist George Monbiot

It was an interesting chat in spite of everything.
Tx for having me.

Very, very worrying.
Deeply worrying what's happening in Germany.

A strong showing in the election could allow the AfD to govern Saxony-Anhalt, turning the eastern state into Germany’s first testing ground for the AfD’s long-running hostility towards migrants, including refugees, Muslims and the LGBTQ+ community.
‘This could just be the beginning’: minorities fear first far-right win in German state election
As polls point to victory in Saxony-Anhalt for AfD party promising deportations, people face agonising choice: stay or g

“We need an Ozempic for cars. They are growing at a phenomenal rate, wreaking havoc on roads, squeezing out smaller vehicles and endangering pedestrians.

Like ever-hungry teenagers, cars in Europe are growing on average a centimetre wider every year.”

Britain’s cars and SUVs are growing bigger – but there is a way to stop this deadly ‘carspreading’ | Christian Wolmar
Larger vehicles crowd our roads and are far more dangerous to pedestrians. Let’s curb them before they do even more damage, says says transport commentator Christian Wolmar

"The Establishment" (noun): elitist journalists who outrageously expose the leader of a political party for doing what all ordinary, honest working people do: cheating, grifting and hiding millions of pounds in donations from fraudsters and overseas billionaires.

If you say “I support Palestine Action”, they might put you in jail. If you incite a racist riot, they put you on TV.
Both the government and the Court of Appeal now treat protesters as terrorists and terrorists as protesters. It's hard to accept that a "Labour" government is imposing rightwing authoritarianism on the UK, but please read this column to see what's happening.+🧵

The Belfast riots, Palestine Action protests. What is terrorism now – and why the hypocrisy? | George Monbiot
The right is obsessed with ‘two-tier policing’. This is indeed a two-tier government – but the real victims are progressives, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

History shows us there are 2 options when faced with a rising far right.
1. Deal with it quickly and decisively.
2. Let it win.
The great majority reject it. But it doesn't need majority support: just enough thugs to intimidate everyone else. Weakness and indecision by government let it rise.
The government must treat this as the emergency it is. Our sovereignty, democracy, and the lives of some of those who live here are threatened by a deadly combination of US billionaires, Russian interests and homegrown fascists. Step 1: Get the money out of politics.🧵

The worst possible way to honour the memory of Henry Nowak, victim of a horrible murder and a grave misjudgement by the police, is to do what Nigel Farage appears to want: turn it into an excuse for racial conflict.

The further we stand away from that, the better off we will be.

That is a factually untrue claim: the Home Office shows that the UK is fifth, getting 1/10 claims, while Germany gets 1/5 claims
