My latest essay for the @arktimes.bsky.social on the legacy of novelist E. Lynn Harris and whether the U of A's culture leaves space for Black gay Arkansans.
What’s really terrifying is knowing that vouchers were originally a tactic of white segregationists to avoid integration in the first place. Mined from the same playbook that birthed Seg Academies back in tha day.

Essay for the @oxfordamerican.bsky.social 's Homemakers series.
“It’s outside our home, though, where I feel him most readily.”

From the Home Makers series, OA Associate Editor @fmckindra.bsky.social moves through the Arkansas spaces his father loved in life, processing his grief along the way.

“I got into sports as a way to tell stories that people didn’t necessarily want to hear the first time.”

—Frederick McKindra interviews journalist @stevengodfrey.bsky.social and discusses how Southern sports can act as a vessel for broader cultural conversations.

I spoke to the @oxfordamerican.bsky.social about my personal Southern displacement for their “Home” issue, as well as using sports to tell stories folks don’t want to hear. oxfordamerican.org/oa-now/throu...

Such a thrill to edit this piece from my former editor at Buzzfeed Reader @theferocity.bsky.social .
“Maybe to distract myself from the question of loneliness, I’m working to chart the depths of my ride with Mister Anthony.”

@theferocity.bsky.social considers a conversation he had with his Lyft driver, Mister Anthony, where they discuss a shared pull to New Orleans.

Movin' On Up! My essay exploring class aspiration and ascension in late 60s era Little Rock.
Sitting just west of University Ave. on a small slice of land, the University Park neighborhood began in the late 1960s as an idea, a stubborn redoubt against the notion that Black citizens should be corralled in the old eastern and southern zones of LR.

My priviledge to essay on my former elementary school and the neighborhood that surrounded it, now largely gone too.
Thirty-five years ago, an LRSD elementary with a court-mandated 50/50 racial balance became one of the most sought-after schools in the state. Now, the campus in Little Rock’s faded East End stands empty.
