In short: I fucking hate tribalism.

I guess I have an aversion to labels and stereotyping. Everyone is so eager to segregate into groups and demonize "the enemy". The "outright demented degenerates" you describe probably think it's "leftists" that want to take away their civil liberties and put them in gulags for thoughtcrimes.

It is a shorthand for "anything/anyone I don't like". I don't feel it has anything to do with ideology (democratic or otherwise), but rather it's a tribalistic expression, defining "us vs them".

It's like in that Tom Gauld's comic:

And funnily enough, conservatives do the same, labelling communists, feminists, etc. as "nazi". It's a thought-terminating cliché by this point.

Hopefully Americans will drive less because of this. Could be a good thing for the climate.

In my view the video wasn't about the GG as a whole, but rather about a certain individual that used their influence to silence their victim, and how that story got buried under the rubble of the culture war that ensued.

Yep, that was my takeaway as well. Not only all genders, but all political leanings.

Also not going to name names, but that story reminded me of a certain high-profile narcissist that used media outrage for his personal gain, all while being shielded from real scrutiny by his connections.

Instead, the media should've *only* cover the anti-GG side and simply describe the whole thing as a harassment campaign and Gamergaters as an amorphous blob with no opinions, only a primal hate of women. Would that be a better reporting?

I see. So the problem, in your eyes (and presumably of OP's eyes as well) was that the media even mentioned the "ethics" angle at all and dedicated if only a sliver of space to hearing out the other side, even if they were mostly derogatory and critical in their reporting of it.

Instead, focus was on the harassment of women. Milo received some pushback and had less time to speak than the other guest.

So yeah, I don't see it. I wish someone would show me some examples of the "legitimate concerns reporting by mainstream outlets", because that's not how I remember it.

I did put it in quotes, didn't I? The OP is saying that "a good percentage" of the press pursued this "ethics in game journalism" angle, but I don't think that's true. AFAIR that angle was mostly ignored by the mainstream media, and only appeared in burgeoning alt-right spaces.

Wait, I always thought it was the reverse. The majority of press would only write about the harassment portion of the controversy and laugh at the "ethics" angle, with some publications going as far as decrying "the death of gamers". Only breitbart and similar places would write about "ethics".
