“Here’s what we found:

Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality.

Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality.

The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”
Big US-style trucks are killing more pedestrians in Australia – our research proves it
Pedestrians are more likely to be killed by heavier cars – and even more so if the vehicle is taller, Australian-first research has found.

Bike-centric cities are living cities. You won't reget it.
“The city’s transition away from the car, tho fantastically chaotic, has become a global role model. Under mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social, Paris was ‘the most influential city in the world’ says Canadian urbanist Brent Toderian. Hidalgo, stepping down after 12 yrs, exulted: ‘The bike beat the car.’”

We have increasing experiences in Australia of "weather whiplash", where two extreme weather events quickly follow each other. We need to support communities to be better prepared and supported. The work by Australia reMADE is a good starting place - https://cstu.io/35969a

Scorching heatwaves, torrential rain – all in a matter of days. It’s not just bad luck
Australia’s weather extremes are increasingly arriving back-to-back in a ‘weather whiplash’.

It's a pity the oil and gas industry can't afford to pay for diesel or pay any more tax

The oil and gas sector had the highest profit margin of any industry in 2024-25
Each year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) puts out its 'Australian Industry' figures, providing a detailed snapshot of how different sectors of the economy are performing. This year’s figures cover the 2024-25 financial year. And...

"Fact-checking remains important. But voters are guided by their heads and their 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀. Especially in a post-truth world, politicians must appeal to both."

Fact-checking is good journalistic practice. But it will do nothing to stop the rise of Pauline Hanson
Post-truth politics means emotions trump facts. The major parties would be wise to remember this when trying to combat the rise of One Nation.

Right now I'm in the epicentre of the heatwave, in southwest France, where the brutality of the heat has ground life to a halt. And I have to keep reminding myself: this is only the beginning.

Europe is breaking heat records — and it's only the start of summer. 🌡️

The UK is hitting 40°C, France has recorded its hottest day ever, and Italy has issued red alerts across 16 cities.

For leaders, this is more than a weather story. Extreme heat quietly erodes focus and decision-making

Good grief.
The share of people on working age payments is historically low.
In which the ABC's national work reporter uncritically reports that sick leave entitlements are a form of income support equivalent to welfare payments.
The number of people accessing income support payments has risen by two million in the past decade, with more Australians unable to work due to deteriorating mental and physical health.

The welfare system isn’t just on fire, it’s burning out of control
The problem with having pattern recognition is that you can always see the fires before they start. Governments are a bit like that, too.  It’s not that they don’t see the fire before the smoke, it’s...
