i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

the experience of COVID really drove this home for me. It wans't the apocalypse, life went on, but a million people died and there were enormous social costs, some of which continue to this day and then when it was done most people were like "let's never think about that again"
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

A real problem with concerns about oil prices spiking even more than they already have is that people cannot do anymore to mitigate increased costs. There's already been mass layoffs, SNAP cuts, plus higher energy and food prices. The unnecessary US-Canada trade war. People are exhausted.

Gas prices hit $4.46 a gallon today — a gain of 17 cents over the previous week and $1.26 higher than the same point last year.

Diesel prices are up more than $2.74 from a year ago.

Families, farmers, and truckers are all getting squeezed.

Meanwhile...

It's pretty damn impressive how much ground Mayor Mamdani has been able to cover after only nine months in office on a wide range of basic quality-of-life issues in NYC.

I was reading through the numbers this morning, and they're kinda astonishing.

Don't want to read *too* much into this, but in the wake of the GOP midterm convention, Trump's approval rating is unchanged, but the generic congressional vote has moved sharply in the Democratic direction. That is, it didn't change people's view of Trump, it just applied that view to the midterms

Be thankful for high gas prices is a hell of a closing message for the midterms.
Trump on his Iran war: "You have a higher gas -- it's a very inexpensive price to pay for what we've done. Remember that. It's a little more. Frankly, even if it was a lot more."

the worst part about this is that a lot of the damage will be permanent

by the time we can turn the research funding back on a lot of folks will have unsurprisingly and not unreasonably decided that they should leave this area of research because it will never be reliable

what a huge waste
NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%.

80%!

A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.
