I'm not down for JVL's B.S. realpolitik. If Trump isn't impeached, then his crimes won't be enumerated for the public to see. Impeach him, but also then have the fuqqing spine to combat his firehouse of lies every day, every hour. Do the fuqqing work of political persuasion. THAT'S THEIR JOBS!

It’s such a perfect example of the Gilded Age have/have not world we’re living in right now where people are suffering more then ever but Apple thinks it’s reasonable to release a $2,000 phone.
I know there are people who buy a new iPhone every year but it feels a little jarring to see the $2000 Duo announcement in contrast to ongoing layoffs, high prices for groceries and gas, food recalls, ICE raids, mass deportations, and people who have lost everything from weather disasters this year

These people believe that individual choice, powered by the invisible hand of the free market, will naturally reveal what is good and what is bad, except when it comes to their own beliefs. Then they're gonna force you to sit there and listen.
Can't believe "I hate you. You're the dumbest generation. You don't deserve jobs." hasn't been a winning sales pitch.

True but that conflates two separate problems: (a) wealth disparity generally and (b) the socioeconomic power and corresponding danger of the <0.001%.

$10m net worth is great but their individual ability to steer gov't policy and economic activity remains insignificant. Not so for the billionaires.
"These billionaires’ total estimated wealth is $8.4 trillion...An enormous number, but it’s less than five percent of total U.S. household wealth. By comparison, households in the 90th to 99th percentile of wealth (from $2 million to $11.5 million) have total wealth of $63.2 trillion! "

OK, if all we needed was more investments in new things.
But we also have to invest in maintaining/improving the old. The care economy is drowning in stories about inadequate access, lengthening waits, deteriorating quality, and rising costs.
The fix isn't private. It's public and it needs tax $$.

I totally respect how Carney is using his personal political currency to bring more investments to Canada at a time when we are staring down the barrel of the trade war gun at a wave of DISinvestment.
I just think he also has to make good on public goods.

"Pretty much every Carney policy has come from left field, justified not by careful study or enacting long-discussed plans, but by his assertion that he’s the Smartest Man in the Room and if we don’t do exactly what he says right now, the Americans will get us."

"governance by whim"

It’s a bit odd to talk about potential costs when in reality nobody has *any* idea what Carney actually has in mind,

I can’t remember a single time in the past 50 years where one man was given such latitude to determine Canada’s future in the absence of *any* public debate or discussion.
There are costs for Mark Carney’s closer ties with Europe
There could be a political cost in addition to the financial price tag for Canada’s proposed “unique alliance” with the European Union.

The details matter. We haven’t spent nearly enough time evaluating Carney’s strategies and absolutely no time considering alternatives. Instead, Canadians are left on the sidelines, guessing at what, exactly, Carney is doing, treated as spectators, not participants, in the country’s fate.

Mark Carney has centralized power to an unprecedented extent. How many people in his small circle are either besties (the otherwise inexplicable Evan Solomon) or besties who are also investment bankers?

And he‘s acting as if we don’t have any options but what he’s doing. But of course we do.
