The GES4SEAS project ended in August 2026. However, there is still more to come in terms of publications and other material. E.g. we have just released version 4.5 of Tikta, the analysis software for spatial and non-spatial data that we used to make cumulative pressure assessments (CEA) and […]

A major milestone has been achieved within the GES4SEAS project by publishing the Tikta software. It is a general-purpose spatial data analysis software, currently focusing on the marine realm and on doing cumulative effects & status assessment.

"Ocean optimism", this was the topic of our last #mooc6.

Now, we have published a Policy Brief on this as well:

Many partners in the GES4SEAS project worked hard on making this possible: A comic book with 10 comics on main marine topics!

It is available in 15 languages and this includes three very interesting European minority languages as well (Basque, Catalan, Low German).

Read, learn, enjoy:

In #mooc 4 about tipping points #tipp we explored the importance of "why it is best not to reach them". The #ges4seas project has now published a policy brief on this topic:

While the GES4SEAS project is in its phase of disseminating its results, we will post some of the achievements here as well. We hope, you will find this material useful as well. GES4SEAS starts with some training sessions for a new software that is being developed.

Curious? Here's the […]

We are ending this #ges4seas #mooc
During one month, you have seen that:
- We have the #policies,
- We have the #science,
- We need the #society, ...
- We need you to change the narrative about the #ocean in communication!
We need #oceanoptimism

Hence, we need to balance our narrative about the future of the ocean.
A few years ago, we published a paper prioritizing topics for a positive action from media, scientists and society.

All the examples we have seen up to now are supported by good science.
We have the UN Decade of the Oceans 2021-2030 "The science we need for the ocean we want" to do this good science

More hope for #ocean
The Marine Protection Atlas measures progress toward protecting 30% of the #ocean in fully and highly protected areas by 2030.
As of today, 9.6% of the ocean is protected and 3.2% is highly protected.

After some research, from 1869 to 2016, one third of European #seagrass area was lost due to disease, deteriorated water quality, and coastal development
The highest decline was the 1970s and 1980s

Recent trend reversal for declining European seagrass meadows - Nature Communications
Seagrass meadows are important but one of the most threatened ecosystems globally. Here the authors analyse data about extent and density of seagrasses in Europe from 1869 to 2016, and find evidence of recent trend reversal for declining European seagrass meadows.

We follow today with our #ges4seas #mooc on #oceanoptimism. Coastal ecosystems and the fishing communities that depend on them are impacted globally by extreme #Climate events (storms, heatwaves, etc.) and human pressures, as in these lobster and sea cucumber #fisheries

Marine #megafauna is at risk in many seas
Sea otters are iconic predators in the north Pacific, but they were heavily hunted for their fur in the 18th and 19th centuries, as @nancyknowlton.bsky.social comments in this post

Welcome to a new #mooc of #ges4seas project on #oceanoptimism, to be developed during next four weeks, on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.
Come and help us to change the narrative about the ocean!
We need some hope and good news!

How do media communicate marine science?

In addition to trusted scientific information, we need to provide hope in the future to society, with examples of good practices.

Let's learn about these in this #mooc, starting on February 2️⃣.

Stay tuned!
