in the aborted weird route she doesn't even get that. from her perspective she just tried to kill herself and her friend and it barely affected anything. the story kept going. none of her suffering changed anything, even for her. a Noelle is just a Noelle.

the scene of her and Kris drowning in the lake is awful but like. Noelle does still get what she wants. she wanted to do something crazy, to step out of the role that was laid out for her, to burn everything down, and she doesn't even let the PLAYER'S protests stop her

failing the weird route in Ch5 is like unbearably depressing to me. she experienced all the horrible stuff that happened to her but she's now convinced it was never even real

i think the amount of backtracking and traversal, especially early on, is probably intentional to show that off, but the idea of "riding around a big field" is unfortunately no longer quite as mind-blowing lol

also i recall playing this on the N64 as a kid and back then the entire concept of a 3D rendered world you could freely roam around in was basically brand new. it was like. Just the process of wandering back and forth was engaging because of the time at which it came out
