I grew up in an apocalypse cult. This helped something click inside my head. My mother had so much anxiety. Believing the cult gave her relief but then she needed her next fix. It was never enough. So she dove deeper, again and again.
I wish it were totally irrelevant, but my childhood in variously batshit apocalypse cults seems to have been useful preparation.
The thing I would like to convey to more normal people is that apocalypse cults have so much gravity because they produce a tremendously relieving clarity of purpose.

For real, I am so tired of explaining to colleagues that all it does is pattern-match. That Apple paper showing its reasoning conks out after about 37000k tokens? Is because humans *rarely write out every detail of long-form reasoning* because we don't have to and it's boring. No examples.
Also I’m sorry but I don’t think this is Claude developing a personality or ethical values. It is *simulating* those things because that is what humans value and reward. The programmers are falling for their own Clever Hans trick!

This is a great point.
There a few lines of thinking for not using the word “fascism” to describe what we’re experiencing, but I think the worst one is the claim that people won’t believe it and/or will think we’re hysterical.
Whether it’s true or not, this idea that we should erase reality is itself fascistic.

saying this is NOT the same thing as saying that the situation is no big deal and everything will be fine - but the truth is, when things look really bad, ceding defeat before you've actually been *defeated* is a completely useless strategy.
I really have lost my former tolerance for "we're doomed/fucked/it's all over/they've won" takes at this point, in that they're the most dangerous attitudes one could possibly have when confronted with a truly existential political threat (which we still DO have levers to address).
