Very good piece by @josiahmortimer.bsky.social. A couple of things I'd add. One, on the point below, one reason Harborne gave for his £36M donation was "competitive spirit" to match Delo. That aspect of it is pathetic willy-waving: www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politic... 1/4

New panic just dropped...

It's "better food" for our kids apparently
The Telegraph is terrified kids are going to become lentil munchers. Dal is famously known to be a very expensive dish. How will schools cope with the burden?

Just imagine how much disinformation and micro targeting £72m gets you…

Shame on the leaders who did nothing to protect democracy from the assault coming its way

As Reform is a limited company, is the £72M a political donation or company buy-out? Do we want to live in a country where ANY party receives millions in donations? “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” Look at the USA and shudder, this is the corollary of big donor politics. Io non ci sto.

Reform has already enjoyed several years of support from a loss-making TV channel whose main function seems to be to give money and favourable coverage to its MPs. The government has done nothing about this. It's probably a more effective way of spending millions than Farage will manage.

Harborne calls his latest bung to Farage a “philanthropic gift to the country”.
Philanthropy isn’t funding racists and climate deniers. Or funnelling cash into deregulation and removal of our rights so tax-avoiding billionaires can profiteer from the chaos. That’s just corruption. We don’t want it.

What the fresh hell is this?
A campaign for *MSF* to be banned as a terrorist group (on the paper thin basis of claims about 2 past employees) is the product of the UK Govt being willing to divorce any meaningful conception of societal threat from its use of proscription powers. Govt needs to wake up to the madness of this:

We loved this so much we just had to put English subtitles on it, apologies to the French speakers for our translation. But this is what it would look like here in the UK if Farage or Lowe or another of their ilk got their own way.

Actual headline: “Farage sold himself to one foreign based crypto millionaire & has now sold his party to yet another one”. What a surprise that a party with little concrete policy has very specific policies on… crypto tax cuts

This is outrageous in and of itself. It's also outrageous that the government isn't doing anything about it. There's a constant political refrain that 'the first duty of government is to protect its citizens'. So do it.

The focus on *misinformation* after the terrible Southport murders did risk the unwitting inference that the mob should have found a church with Rwandan parishioners instead, or that the mob attack would have been justified if the perpetrator had been a co-religionist of those at the mosque.
What is this comment from the Labour MP? No, the issue here isn't that the attempted pogrom had the wrong targets!

Codswallop, as the Home Office's own stats make clear. To claim, for example, that Iraqi Kurds don't face persecution automatically discounts this "whistleblower" as someone without the knowledge to be conducting reviews or speaking on asylum recognition rates.
