Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing.
I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing.

The other thing sorely lacking is any form of fail state. How am I supposed to know a character is going through challenging times if they never hit a Game Over screen ?
One thing video games have over film is collecting shards. Regardless of how big Christopher Nolan goes with his camera, his movies will never allow us to collect shards.
