Why does ‘Dutch’ refer to the Low Countries, but ‘Deutsch’ to Germany?
It’s because their ancestor denoted any vernacular continental West Germanic language. Only later did their meanings specify.

ok so latin grammarians say Italia has a short first vowel that just gets lengthened to fit in dactylic meter plus the likely oscan source has an /e/ < short /i/ (despite the misleading transliteration VÍTELIÚ) so we can just chalk greek ῑταλίᾱ up to metrical license as well right
