On Oct. 4, 1957, the Avro Arrow was unveiled with the intention of it being the RCAF's primary interceptor in the 1960s.
Less than two years later, the program was abruptly cancelled and 14,528 Avro employees were put out of work.

On Sept. 1, 1980, Terry Fox was forced to end his Marathon of Hope near Thunder Bay when his cancer returned. While he never got the chance to continue his run, a large memorial now honours him near where his run came to an end.

On July 20, 1980, Terry Fox reached Stratford, Ontario. He was personally greeted by British actress Maggie Smith, who was performing at the Stratford Festival that summer. She gave him a hug, kiss, and a personal donation to the Marathon of Hope.

It featured a giant who told them to "look up!...waaaaaay up!"
For the next 27 years, the show was a fixture on CBC and is beloved to this day.

On this day in 1826, Bytown was founded. It was named for Colonel John By with the British Royal Engineers who oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal. The community was renamed Ottawa on Jan. 1, 1855 when it incorporated as a city.

On this day in 1908, the University of Alberta opened in Edmonton.
The first cohort at the university was 45 students, including seven women. Classes were initially held at Queen Alexandra School in Strathcona (now part of Edmonton) with five professors.
