My latest piece argues that Canada’s approach to the EU could prove productive, because unlike the UK’s high-handed, entitled attitude, it is not based on an assumption that the EU “owes” it a good deal, or that Canada holds all the cards, lingering fantasies about the US relationship etc etc.

It would be quite 'something' if, after all the talk of leaving the EU to create CANZUK, there ends up being CANZEU without the UK
Australia and Canada are leading the way - they are choosing closer ties with the EU.

The EU is our closest partner.

The UK government should put EU membership on the table. It's really a no-brainer.

Let's be clear: we want to fully rejoin the EU.

But if Canada can be an "associate member" of the EU, then the UK having the same status is a no-brainer.

Really interesting to hear @rafaelbehr.bsky.social - pretty much the best commentator on UK politics IMO - given the chance to expound at length on the current situation (and credit to @nickcohen.bsky.social for creating the frame for it - an under-rated skill).

🇬🇧 It was always a risk that Brexit would lead to the breakup of the UK.

🇪🇺 One of the best ways to avoid that would be EU membership.

📊 It isn't just the people of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland who want membership - our polling shows the majority of people in England want it too.

It's the crypto aspect (as well as size of the donations/ concentration of donation to a couple of individuals) which is of particular concern: regardless of the currency of the donation, what is the origin of all this money? What are the underlying activities upon which these fortunes are built?

- lower migration (as many of us have long said) will be bad news for public finances

- OBR doesn't (directly) assess impact of migration *policy* changes - and it should

The OBR needs to give us more clarity on migration
