I always tried to learn Latin vocabulary as layers of “regular” morphemes and the sound-change rules that produced apparent irregularity. It didn’t always work, but it stuck better for me than rote memorization.

I have great admiration for people who write or translate for small-numbers language markets.

This is a parent who isn't going to be visited often in the nursing home.

Congratulations!

I got that by searching online (and then identifying reliable websites in the search returns). No special access to the information.

Here's what the IRS has to say (tl;dr, Anthropic payments will be taxable).: www.irs.gov/government-e...

And here's a more specific answer from the Authors Guild: authorsguild.org/advocacy/art...
Tax implications of settlements and judgments | Internal Revenue Service
IRC Section 104 provides an exclusion from taxable income with respect to lawsuits, settlements and awards. However, the facts and circumstances surrounding each settlement payment must be considered.

Not because it was romantically traumatic, but because even if it had all worked perfectly, it wouldn't have been worth the effort. There are much easier romantic breakfasts to make from scratch.

1. Anecdote is freely available for use.
2. May have mis-remembered which girlfriend was involved.

My romantic croissant story: Once upon a time, for the first woman I ever invited to spend the night, I decided to bake home-made croissants for breakfast. Prepared the dough ahead of time. Slipped out of bed to pre-heat the oven...and the oven was kaput. Never made croissants from scratch again. +

Oh, I won’t have confidence in the process until money arrives. For all I know, even the simplest of “conflicts” may delay it. (Like: the presence or absence of “Inc” in my publisher’s name. I submitted a “duplicate of” correction, but who knows if that will go through on the first round?)

I generally translate this type of review as “had insufficient sexual content for my tastes.”

If I correctly understand the various responses from them, changes will not be reflected in the website. They just expect us to have faith that it will all work out when they collate everyone’s changes.

In my experience with business meetings, the only thing worse than a badly worded proposition offered for vote is the result of realtime wordsmithing a badly worded proposition in order to avoid a year’s delay in voting on it.

We did lots of cross-country road trips as a family when I was a kid. It was a ritual to pull out the atlas over breakfast and plan the day’s route, including scenic side-trips. (This was after we kids were old enough not to be annoying. Before that our dad made the decisions and drove at night.)

Every time another of these giveaways pops into the news, I think of that exchange in The Residence:

“Where will the money come from?”
“Where does money ever come from? From another pile of money.”

One big thing I learned from my deep dive into the history of WSFS constitutional changes, when writing The Theory of Related-ivity was how bad people are at crafting language that does the intended purpose. I mean, *they* knew what they meant!

I love “if you are not doing (thing), which you consider a bad thing to do, then you have no standing to have an opinion on (thing).”

A resolution making a recommendation? Yes, but with little force. A requirement? Probably not. It’s also harder than one might think to craft a proposal that does exactly and only what is desired. We often fail at that for even trivial things.

As several recent business meeting actions have illustrated (see e.g., recommendations to not allow memberships to specific individuals) the current scope of WSFS constitution power is limited with respect to the running of the convention. +

Vaso-vagal syncope is a thing. Not something that "being tough" can prevent. Best thing anyone can do is know they're prone to it and let the medical professionals know. (Back when I did phlebotomy, I had a few patients ask to be lying down for the blood draw, knowing they might faint.)
