FWIW, Kagi’s AI usage defaults to opt-in on a per-query basis — you have to end the query with a question mark — and they just recently announced new options to disable even that, so they seem to smell which way the wind is blowing.

I can personally attest that paying for Kagi is absolutely worth it. Good search results out of the box, with all kinds of available filtering refinements (“bangs” and “lenses”) on top of that.
