MtPain's Dean of Doom series on YT is finally over and I just want to say how grateful I am for it. I was into Doom WADs a bit before watching but he really pushed me to dive deeper into the scene, not only through the breadth of his coverage but also the more artistic bent of his analysis.

"what are videogames even for?" is an interesting question to me. i think ideally i want them to have a similar richness to spending time with another person, (even if, maybe especially if, they are single player) so i value being exposed to a person's ideas and idiosyncracies through a game
kinda wish we'd circle back to the "what are videogames even for?" argument more these days because... passive stimulation delaying people's existential dread and increasing their screen time is not a particularly great argument for a thing to exist in my book. not to mention a really depressing one

In retrospect TGM2 has changed my opinion on games a lot. I spent a lot of time in thoughtless grinding, and it was satisfying to improve, but at the end of the day I haven't gotten much out of it. If I spent that time developing an actual skill or even just improving at a multiplayer game...
