Even if I say so myself, I'm rather pleased with these PHP Vitals benchmarks for the new @huddersfieldhistory.org.uk website. If you're struggling with a slow WordPress site on a sluggish server, feel free to get in touch -- I've been hosting WP sites of all shapes and sizes continuously since 2005.

Wish I'd thought of doing this ages ago, but converting web server request signatures into blocks of colour (i.e. convert to MD5 hex hash and then use the first 30 chars as 5 sets of RGB values) sure makes it much easier to spot repeating patterns (i.e. bots pretending to be human) in the requests.

Interesting pub name - often said to be a corruption of "sour" (as in gone off beer) or of a female pig (sow), the evidence points towards it deriving from the name of an early landlord when it was called the New Inn: John o't' Saah

Sadly the drop off in bots didn't last very long. The residential proxy bots are still out there, but there's been a big uptick in AI companies falling back to using data centres to do their data theft activities (mostly Amazon AWS) rather than hiding behind proxies.

Heads up to anyone hoping to catch a train from Huddersfield to Leeds. As well as cancellations and delays, there's a nasty trackside fire just after Morley right next to some signalling equipment. No sign of anyone trying to put it out when we crawled past🔥

I'm not sure how you'd even begin to explain what "Merrie England" was to someone who'd never heard of them before. Imagine a handful of people eating roast beef sandwiches whilst sat underneath a cartwheel festooned with fake candle lightbulbs whilst entirely surrounded by very very VERY dark wood.

I've been staring at AI bots for so long that I can spot their "tells" a mile off. One is that they fake the "referer" HTTP header in a really dumb way. Everyone likes search engines sending users to their site, right?

Turns out it was that dodgy Israeli-run botnet (mentioned previously) which finally got their comeuppance, so AI companies are now having to find alternate methods to steal content:

I'm sure that some of you know that I run a tarpit site designed to lure AI bots in and trap them with an infinite labyrinth of plausible yet gibberish text. I was beginning to worry about the recent drop in requests but, woohoo, they're back again 🙂 Drink freely upon the poison, little bots! ☠️
