During our first in-person Experimental Showcase at Supermercator, we celebrated a cohort of exciting new artists, and also took the opportunity to honour our hall-of-famers, who won previous digital editions. The event ended with audiences getting the chance to know some of our fabulous filmmakers better. The film works on many levels, most notably its intriguing aesthetic.

In some ways, I hope it stays that way. This may be the most harrowing four-minute watch I have encountered in my time as a critic. But given the subject matter, that is entirely appropriate.

Niu Lai is a truly horrendous animated tale following a cow and her calf through a half-rendered CGI sandbox – high on drawn-out dramatic pauses, low on consequence. But while it reviews have inevitably evoked discussion around being one of the best ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ watches ever, it also offers nothing that veterans of that medium won’t have laughed harder at elsewhere. So, what is its grand appeal?

How long have you been making films for now? Just under two years, really. I’d messed around with making things before that, but I’d say I’ve only been taking it seriously for the last couple of years.

Project Hail Mary is another of those films I’ve ignored countless recommendations for. Ahead of this evening’s solar eclipse, however, I finally caved in – and found swept up in a surprisingly moving sci-fi that takes as much wonder from its humanity, as it does from the endless majesty of space. Director: AJ Moss Writer: AJ Moss Cast: Corina Carrillo, Jyllian Petrie, Matt Mattson, Natalie Paige Willison Running time: 15mins Morbid Sight is honest about what it is. This is a proof of concept – with a note in the end credits informing us it was “based on the feature length screenplay by AJ Moss”. The writer-director behind this production clearly envisions a world with more time and space to tell a wider story set in this universe, then, and that’s fair enough.
