New blog post: How I Design Original Arcade-Style Games

Arcade players kept telling me that Hyper Bun Buster's game mechanics felt arcade-like, despite it not playing like any existing arcade games. Here are some tips if you want to design arcade-like games too.

New blog post: How to 1 Credit Clear (1CC) Arcade Games

I get asked about this from time to time so I thought I'd write a post about it. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but hopefully it helps make arcade games feel a little less intimidating. They're just games!

It makes people think about game skill as something more like talent, it makes them doubt their own ability to improve and stops them from engaging with games they might have otherwise, or on the other end it makes ppl over-focus on carryover skills and become entitled to getting *those* tested

One of the most consistently damaging thought patterns among players is treating skill level as static and games as exams rather than something more like instruments. You walk in with whatever skills you had, you get tested & graded and you walk out. It leads to *a lot* of negative trends

you tell someone that you feel like something you like is losing its identity to appeal to a broader audience and they start talking to you like a shareholder

Many people are dismissive of Crazy Taxi's gameplay for various reasons, but the one that frustrates me the most is when people say Crazy Taxi is just a minigame that doesn't stand as a solo game, because it just shows how little value people hold for arcade design.

Hyper Bun Buster: Rocket Hammer Action's demo is out on Steam!

It's top-down arcade bump action game where you play as a bunny girl who uses her huge hammer to hit enemies into other enemies!

Character action, sandbox & RPG design terms/concepts have to be completely quarantined from all other discussions. Their ideas of player expression, freedom, depth have never clarified and will never clarify anything to anyone

"The core problem of the beat-'em-up genre in 2025 is content. ... You were expected to replay them over and over, mastering their nuances over time.

In the modern era, that can feel like a half-formed hook. Mastery is fun, but we expect more structure—progression and variation."

Natsume Atari has filed a trademark for Shatterhand in Japan: chizai-watch.com/t/2025097921

Shatterhand is a 2D action game originally released for NES. The trademark might suggest a remake or sequel is in the works, a la Shadow of the Ninja Reborn or Pocky & Rocky Reshrined.

It is now the 8th anniversary of Mania so time to dig up some Sonic trivia... This year, it's Kanga Clanga! (aka the Kangus). This lovable robo-roo originally lived in the outback but now entertains us all in Pinball Carnival Zone!

One day video essayists will learn to actually play arcade games before talking about them and realize that they can't use them exclusively as a punching back to elevate modern indie games cuz a lot of the stuff they praise in modern games was already done there long ago

its time for a truly unfair game. increase difficulty scaling by 50% if your username starts with a P. extra gold if you're french. red arremer randomly appears and kicks your ass but only if you bought the game on a steam sale. let it ride.

There are newer players who are more critical but they are inexperienced and only play stuff like SOR4 and a handful of new games, and have a very narrow lense of analysis. The oldschool fans are basically fanboys that will, even when acknowledging issues, hype up slop. Reviews are brain melt.

I don't think there is a video game genre on the planet that needs a bunch of harsh veteran critics with well defined tastes as much as beat 'em ups. The consistent inability of separating the slop from the good stuff the fans suffer from is gonna completely destroy it in the long run

Imagine how many stupid redundant online arguments would be solved if gamers would learn how to say "it was too frustrating and not fun enough", or "I don't have the patience for it" or even just "takes too much time for me". As is, theyre still just as emotional but a lot less honest
